About: The personal protection system taught by the NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club is based in Jiu-Jitsu and American Kenpo, supplemented by principles from Chinese and Filipino martial arts and European boxing methodology. The instructors teach a blending of realistic, "no-frills" techniques where the safety of our students, both inside and outside training, is paramount. Wasteful movements and unrealistic fine motor control-based joint manipulations are removed entirely in favour of gross motor function techniques and stress habituation drills, designed by law enforcement and military agencies to be useable across a range of combat stress levels. Our personal protection programme is fully modular, with Level 1 designed to be taught over eight concurrent ninety-minute classes. Each lesson builds on the knowledge gained in the previous lesson and gradually introduces students to the stresses associated with modern personal-protection situations such as muggings, street attacks, etc. The regular Self-Defence Club class schedule is supplemented by regular seminars, workshops and cross-training sessions taught by guest instructors from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. This further contributes to the flexibility and versatility that has become the trademark of NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club students.
